What Happens If You Stop Sleeping?
—A Slightly Sleep-Deprived Exploration by Yours Truly

Let me tell you about the time I almost became a zombie. Not the cool, post-apocalyptic kind that lurches dramatically toward a helicopter, but the real-life, dark-circle-under-the-eyes, forget-what-I’m-saying-mid-sentence kind. The kind that stares into the fridge for ten minutes before realizing they were supposed to be brushing their teeth.
All because I thought, “Hey, what if I just… didn’t sleep?”
For science. For curiosity. For sheer chaos.
At first, skipping sleep feels a little thrilling. Like you’re hacking time. Who needs 8 hours of unconsciousness when I could be productive, or binge-watch documentaries about octopus intelligence at 3 a.m.? I was ready to become one of those hyper-efficient, superhuman outliers who only sleeps 4 hours and still manages to run companies, raise goats, and practice cello.
But reality had other plans.
After 24 hours without sleep, things got a bit weird. My brain felt like it had been replaced by mashed potatoes. Focus? Gone. Coordination? Laughable. I accidentally brushed my teeth with face wash. Twice.
Science calls this cognitive impairment, but I call it “trying to reply to an email while your brain is on airplane mode.” Studies show that 24 hours without sleep is equivalent to being legally drunk. And honestly, that checks out. Except instead of slurring words at a party, I was slurring them to my cat while trying to explain the plot of Inception backwards.
By the 36-hour mark, my body was staging a full rebellion. I had the energy level of a wilted spinach leaf. My reaction time slowed to a degree that would’ve gotten me banned from even riding a tricycle. My eyes were dry, my skin was dull, and my stomach couldn’t decide if it wanted coffee or to punch me for drinking more coffee.
Why? Because sleep isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s when your body does vital housekeeping. It cleans out toxins in your brain. It repairs cells. It resets your emotional circuits. Without it, your immune system weakens, your stress hormones spike, and your body basically starts acting like that one co-worker who forgets their badge every day: unreliable and mildly alarming.
48 hours in, and things really spiraled.
I started hearing sounds that didn’t exist—phantom phone pings, whispery voices, the jingle of an ice cream truck that definitely wasn’t there at 2 a.m. Hallucinations, science says. I say: terrifyingly unhelpful.
At one point, I became convinced my plant was judging me.
That’s because the longer you stay awake, the more your brain’s default mode network (the stuff involved in introspection and daydreaming) starts misfiring. Reality and dreams blur. You lose the ability to regulate emotions. I cried because I dropped a spoon.
A spoon.
Now, I didn’t go full insomniac experiment mode—people who go without sleep for more than 72 hours experience serious mental health breakdowns. In extreme sleep deprivation, your body can even begin to force microsleeps: tiny, involuntary naps lasting a few seconds, during which you can literally fall asleep standing up.
One scientist once stayed awake for 11 days as an experiment. He became paranoid, delusional, and temporarily forgot how to do basic arithmetic. (Fun fact: he later became a radio host. Make of that what you will.)
In short: your body needs sleep. It’s not laziness. It’s a biological requirement, like food, water, or finding your phone charger before bed. When you deprive yourself of sleep, you’re not being edgy or productive—you’re actively sabotaging your brain and body.
So yes, I eventually caved. I face-planted into a pillow and woke up nine hours later with a small trail of drool and a renewed sense of reality. My plant looked less judgmental. The spoon incident was forgiven.
And now, I cherish my sleep. I bow to the melatonin gods. I protect my bedtime like it’s the last piece of chocolate cake. Because if you stop sleeping, your body and mind will revolt. They’ll throw a chaotic little party, and you will be the only one not invited.
Lesson learned: sleep is the real superpower.
